Sony’s path to DVD technology started with their invention of the first successfully marketed transistor radio back in the 1960s. The radio then brought Sony to the development of the decades-long leader in television sets—the Trinitron. From there, the multinational powerhouse brought us the Walkman and Discman personal music players, the so-called grandfathers of the widely popular Apple iPods. The Playstation and portable Playstation followed, making Sony one of the world leader’s in the electronic entertainment industry.
Sony began its foray into recording devices way back in 1965 when it developed a prototype personal video recorder that was capable of recording an unprecedented one-hour of action on a videocassette. Following this beginning, Sony continued its innovative research by releasing Betamax, which was, after a long and procured battle with competitor, replaced by the VHS videocassette. Not to be left behind, Sony introduced video technology that helped the industry reach the milestones we enjoy today.
One of these newest milestones is the Sony DVDirect. The DVDirect technology allows video and digital photos to be recorded onto a DVD without using a computer. The device has video inputs for connection of a camcorder, VCR, or personal video recorder. Once connected users can copy their video and photos directly onto DVD-R and DVD-RW discs. Sony’s DVDirect also has slots for the five popular video and photo devices. It records the images onto a disc as a DVD slideshow. DVDirect can also be connected to a compatible printer to print photos from a memory card or directly from a DVDirect-created DVD. Not surprisingly, the DVDirect can also be connected to a personal computer via a USB port.
Sony offers two DVDirect models for sale. The DVDirect MC3 Multi-Function DVD Recorder, which retails for $249.99, is the highest end model. It has a large LCD screen for viewing video and photos, is highly compatible with the Handycam, and allows users to connect easily via Windows XP or 2000. Sony’s middle of the road DVDirect recorder is the DVDirect MC1 Multi-Function DVD recorder, which retails for $219.99. Finally, Sony also offers a DVDirect device for $199.99. The VRD-VC30 DVDirect DVD Recorder focuses specifically on allowing users to record video onto DVDs with the use of a computer. It provides advanced editing tools as well. The VRD-VC20 DVDirect DVD Recorder is the simplest to use of the DVDirect models. Simply connect the device to your camcorder, click on the record button, and your video is recorded onto a DVD.
Sony’s DVDirect DVD recorder technology has won numerous industry awards. From PC Magazine, it won the 2006 Editor’s Choice Award. PC World awarded the DVDirect with its Innovations 2006 Award. Finally, American Photo recognized Sony with its 2006 Editor’s Choice Award. The DVDirect device has been designed to open the digital video and photography market to the millions of people without access to computers or without the computer savvy to utilize the other high-tech devices on the market. It is commendable that as the world gets more and more high-tech, an industry giant looks for means to allow all users to enjoy the in latest technology. And, according to the industry, its latest awards, and consumer response, Sony’s DVDirect has met with overwhelming success in this arena.
